CORTISOL – The Stress Hormone

Our relationship with hormones is critical to survival. In health news, we are all too familiar with the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol has several responsibilities including managing metabolism and immune response. But we are more familiar with cortisol as it relates to stress.

And stress is a big problem. Too much cortisol and you are prone to weight gain, certain diseases, you get flushed in the face, you develop a barrel belly but have stick arms and legs, you become irritable.

You think caffeine will fix it so you down a coffee, or maybe a Red Bull or even a Coke. And so it goes. Tired, exhausted, stimulate self with caffeine, crash and do it all again. And you wonder why you have an ever expanding midsection?

What do you really need? Your body is screaming out for nutrition. Adrenals are late to complain so when they are in trouble, they are really in trouble. Adrenal fatigue seems to be a common term thrown around these days. What’s needed now are mineral rich foods, clean foods.

A common mistake is to skip breakfast, which for tired adrenals, is like throwing water on a fire. It’s impossible to start your day without fuel, so eating breakfast is a critical step. Another pillar of Eating Clean is to combine the macronutrients at every meal. Healthy fats, protein and complex carbs need to appear at every meal. Clean foods take time to burn down into fuel. Processed foods burn too fast leaving your tank empty.

EAT CLEAN® ADRENAL NOURISHING SOUP

This recipe, rich in minerals and alkalinizing agents, will help you balance the acidity that usually occurs in people experiencing adrenal fatigue and stress. It has a calming, settling effect.

Yield: 4 cups, 4 servings

Ingredients:

16 oz. fresh green beans

1 cup chopped celery + leaves

1 good sized zucchini, sliced

1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped

1 large leek, trimmed, tough greens removed, chopped and well rinsed

1 cup fresh tomatoes, coarsely chopped

1 handful fresh parsley

2 cups water

2 Tbsp raw honey

1 tsp paprika

1 cup homemade or low sodium commercial chicken broth

2 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar

1 1/2 tsp unrefined sea salt

Method:

Combine ingredients and simmer for one hour until vegetables are tender.

Season with freshly grated black pepper and a little more unrefined sea salt if desired

TIP – Quick fix minerals. In times of severe adrenal exhaustion, the solution is to eat unrefined sea salt. Just lick one of your fingers and dip into some of this beautiful salt.
